چکیده

This paper discusses the selection of tools and cutting parameters in milling operations. To carry out this research, an expert system has been developed based on numerical methods of performance evaluation. The knowledge base is given by limitations in process variables, which let us to define the allowable cutting parameter space. The mentioned limitations are instabilities due to tool-work-piece interaction, known as chatter vibration, the power available in the spindle motor and milling forces control restrictions. Then, a tool cost model is contrived. It is used to choose a suitable cutting tool, among a known set of candidate available cutters, and to obtain the appropriate cutting parameters, which are expert system outputs. Finally, the expert system can automatically provide other cutter and/or cutting parameters if process specifications change. An example is presented to illustrate the method.

An Instantaneous Rigid Force Model For 3-Axis Ball-End Milling Of Sculptured Surfaces

An instantaneous rigid force model for prediction of cutting forces in ball-end milling of  sculptured surfaces is presented in this paper. A commercially available geometric engine is used to represent the cutting edge, cutter and updated part geometries. The cutter used in this work is an insert type ball-end mill. Intersecting an inclined plane with the cutter ball nose generates the cutting...

Three dimensional modeling and finite element simulation of a generic end mill

The geometry of cutting flutes and the surfaces of end mills is one of the crucial parameters affecting the quality of the machining in the case of end milling. These are usually represented by two-dimensional models. This paper describes in detail the methodology to model the geometry of a flat end mill in terms of three-dimensional parameters. The geometric definition of the end mill is devel...

Collision-free 3-axis milling and selection of cutting tools

The present paper deals with local and global conditions for collision-free 3-axis milling of sculptured surfaces and the selection of cutting-tools for a given surface. We describe local and global millability results whose proofs have been published in a previous paper. The theoretical background involves general oo-set surfaces. Here an algorithm is presented which after evaluation of the su...
